Me! Accountable?

Accountability is not a popular subject in today's society.  It seems we are always looking for someone else to blame when things do not turn out the way we expect.  The Bible uses the word "stewardship" to describe the concept of individual and personal responsibility.  In this series we are going to consider the four "O's" of accountability:  Order (priority), Ownership, Opportunity, and Obedience.  The Apostle Paul said it best:  "Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful."

It’s a Matter of Order!

Haggai 1:5-9—“Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts:  ‘Consider your ways!  You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes.’  Thus says the Lord of hosts:  ‘Consider your ways!  Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,’ says the Lord.  ‘You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away.  Why?’ says the Lord of hosts.  ‘Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.’”

It’s a Matter of Ownership!

Matthew 19:16-26—“Now behold, once came and said to Him, ‘Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?’  So He said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good?  No one is good but One, that is, God.  But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.’  He said to Him, ‘Which ones?’  Jesus said, ‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  The young man said to Him, ‘All these things I have kept from my youth.  What do I still lack?’  Jesus said to him, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.’  But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.  Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.  And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.’  When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, ‘Who then can be saved?’  But Jesus looked at them and said to them, ‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”

It’s a Matter of Opportunity!

1 Kings 17:8-16—“Then the word of the Lord came to (Elijah), saying, ‘Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there.  See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.’  So he arose and went to Zarephath.  And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks.  And he called to her and said, ‘Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.’  And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, ‘Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.’  So she said, ‘As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.’  And Elijah said to her, ‘Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son.  For thus says the Lord God of Israel:  ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’’  So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days.  The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by Elijah.”

It’s a Matter of Options!

John 3:16—“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
